The Wave, one of the most exclusive and dramatic hiking spots in the southwestern United States will get easier to visit under a new proposal. If you are interested in hiking the colourful sandstone rock formation, it is the right time for you to plan a trip next month.
[rpi]
The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that it will allow 64 people per day to hike the popular rock formation known as The Wave, situated in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument near the Utah-Arizona border. Previously, only 20 hikers were allowed onto the site in order to preserve the backcountry wilderness experience and protect the sandstone formation. The new limit of 64 visitors per day will go into effect on 1st February. From that time, the BLM will monitor resources and social conditions and could implement further increases or decreases in the future.
The Wave is one of the world’s most incredible and visually stunning natural wonders. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to access. If you are interested in hiking the colourful sandstone rock formation, there are two options for you to choose from. Forty-eight people or 12 groups (whichever comes first) each day are awarded permits through an online lottery four months in advance and the other half is released for walk-in visitors every day. Along with your permit, you will get a map with photo points directing you to The Wave. It is only accessible by foot and there is no trail, so you must follow the landmarks on the map and walk six miles round-trip in order to visit.
Situated in the Coyote Buttes North section of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, The Wave is famous among nature photographers and hikers for its unusual features. In 2018, more than 200,000 individuals applied for the 7300 permits available to take the 9.5km round-trip hike through the Coyote Buttes North section of the park to reach the site. However, only 3.6% of applicants were granted permits to visit The Wave.
Aside from providing an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and history of New York City, the Empire State Trail gives New Yorkers from every corner of the state a safe outlet for outdoor recreation, healthy lifestyles as well as bolstering tourism-related economic development.
[rpi]
New York City has finally put the finishing touches on the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile cycling and walking trail that stretches from New York City to the Canadian border. Initially announced in 2017, the Empire State Trail was officially opened on December 31st, 2020, providing a new way for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors during the coronavirus pandemic, driving tourism and economic activity to communities across the state.
The Empire State Trail connects about 400 miles of previously unlinked off-road trails and adds nearly 180 miles of new off-road trails to the state’s network. Bicyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to explore and experience the Empire State’s urban centres, scenic landscapes and historic sites across New York City, including Schodack Island State Park, Fort Ticonderoga, Buffalo Harbour State Park and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. What’s more, the nature trail is also a guide to some of New York’s favourite craft breweries, wineries and other cultural attractions, from New York City through the Hudson River Valley, the Erie Canalway Trail and the Champlain Valley Trail, between the Capital District and Canada. State officials partnered with brewers to create an Empire State Trail Brewery Passport that allows people to earn stamps from an estimated 200 craft breweries located within 10 miles of the trail. With the goal of increasing tourism throughout New York City, the state invested $200 million to complete the Empire State Trail.
With the goal of preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, US President Biden announced a new set of sweeping new public health measures on both domestic and international travel.
[rpi]
Backed by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), comes into effect on January 26th, the executive order requires travellers arriving on international flights to present a negative Covid-19 result from a test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. People arriving in the US from nearly all countries will be required to quarantine for seven days while masks will be mandated on many domestic trains, planes and buses. This mandate aims to protect Americans from the new Covid-19 variants that are being found around the globe. Additionally, the president reinstated a ban on most travel from the United Kingdom, many countries in Europe and Brazil and blocked travel for non-US citizens who recently visited South Africa.
The testing requirement was introduced by the previous administration, but the quarantine was only a recommendation. According to the executive order, air travellers must comply with applicable CDC guidelines relating to international travel, including mask-wearing, physical distancing, timely testing and recommended periods of self-quarantine. However, the executive order does not explain how quarantine will be enforced.
Aside from wearing face masks, all passengers arriving in America from another country must test before they get on the planes before they depart and quarantine when they arrive in America. The new administration is also in talks with Canada and Mexico to implement new public health guidelines at the land borders. All non-essential travel with Canada and Mexico is currently on hold until February 21st, 2021. The US State Department has advised Americans to seriously reconsider their trips overseas. If they are overseas right now, it is going to be harder to come home for a while, so they should have a ‘plan B’ in case they were unable to fly home.
