Flora world map at Heathrow Airport

(#wanderlusttips #flowermap #Heathrowairport) A new art installation at Terminal 5 features a map of the world created entirely in flowers featuring each country’s favourite scent.
[rpi]

A map was created by florist Larry Walshe using about 2,000 fresh flowers, as well as other fragrant pieces like amber and sandalwood, to create a living artwork that will be in the terminal until 24 September. As the airport sells around 2.6 million bottles of perfume a year, the 11 x 18-foot piece is there to celebrate the new season of fragrances.

Each country in the map is depicted with a scent that is featured in the most popular fragrances of that country. For Brits, there are roses, for the US and Mexico there is lavender and orange blossoms, while in India there is mint and mandarin. According to Heathrow, the most popular scents around the world are jasmine (28%), lavender (27%) rose (24%), vanilla (20%) and sandalwood (19%).

Along with the art installation, there will also be a limited edition gift wrap at World Duty Free for passengers who buy a fragrance in the month of September.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Five things to remember before eating street food

Five things to remember before eating street food

Not only is street food a cheaper meal option, but it’s also essential to experiencing the best and most authentic food that many cities have to offer. Before trying everything that’s sold from a cart, there a few tricks to living that street-meat life you need to know. Here are our tips for easing your mind (and stomach) around food-handling environments that you may not be used to.

[rpi]

Knowledge is power

Before traveling, you need to research what to eat. Find what’s commonly eaten in the area you’re traveling to and get an idea of what the food should look like—as well as the scenario in which the food is usually served. Locals and travelers won’t be singing the praises of chicken skewers that have been sitting in the hot sun all day.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Five things to remember before eating street food

Always wait in line at the busy stall

Busy street food stalls are an indicator of popularity, and their high turnover rate means the food is never sitting out for hours and developing dreaded bacteria. Yes, long lines can be discouraging when you’re hungry after a full day of exploring, but it’s not worth the risk of grabbing precooked food from the empty spot next door.

But there’s a caveat: A line for squid on a stick outside of Wat Pho doesn’t necessarily mean that cart is particularly good—it’s probably busy because of its location. Instead, look for a line that has locals in it and order what they’re ordering. Pointing and nodding your head works just fine when you’re hungry and there’s a language barrier. Think of it as Yelp in real time.

Eat when the locals are eating

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Five things to remember before eating street food

The last and most important element here is when to eat. You’re likely already on a weird eating schedule while you’re traveling, but it’s important to try and adjust to the eating times of where you are. A bowl of pho might be lunch for Americans, but it’s breakfast for the Vietnamese. This ensures that you’re eating freshly cooked food and that you can find the best and most popular places to eat.

If you can’t drink the water, then you can’t eat the salad.

Most people get so hung up on not drinking the water or skipping ice in drinks that they don’t think about all of the other ways in which water is used in food service. While eating a salad or fresh strawberries may seem like a much-needed break from the meaty, carb-heavy street meals you’ve been having, you’re much more likely to get sick. Fruits and vegetables tend to be washed with tap water in most places, rather than the filtered water that locals drink—or sometimes it’s not washed at all. If you’re really craving some produce, try fruits you can peel or cooked veggies.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Five things to remember before eating street food

Trust your gut

If you’re unsure about the food or the way that it’s being prepared, then keep moving. Eating street food all over the world doesn’t make you an expert. Every stall and every country are different, and sometimes the rules can be harder to follow. When something doesn’t look, smell, or feel right, don’t eat it! Trust your judgment. Chances are that there’s another spot close by that’s making something more delicious.

Zurich ranked world’s most sustainable city

(#wanderlusttips#Zurich #Swiss) Zurich may be most famous as the beating heart of the global banking industry, but it is also the world’s most sustainable city, according to a new global rankings released today by Dutch building consultants Arcadis.

[rpi]

Seeing off competition from the likes of Singapore, Seoul and Sydney, Switzerland’s largest city topped a list of 100 major places which were ranked across what the index compilers call the “three dimensions of sustainability”: people, planet and profit. The survey was carried out by Dutch building consultants Arcadis who used 32 indicators to compile the list. These ranged from life expectancy, education and income inequality to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and green space within cities.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Zurich ranked world’s most sustainable city

Overall, Zurich scored 74.6 per cent in the rankings, driven by a strong performance on environmental and economic performance. It was closely followed by Singapore, Stockholm, Vienna and London, which all scored above 73 per cent.

The report highlighted a number of Zurich’s sustainable achievements, including investment efficient and renewable energies, a sustainable public transport system and a willingness to increase public awareness of environmental issues. Singapore, Stockholm, Vienna and London all came in the top five, while Manila, Delhi, Nairobi, Cairo and Kolkata propped up the other end of the sustainability scale. In the foreword to the report, John Batten the Global Director of Water and Cities at Arcadis, wrote, “the purpose of the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index is not to create a hierarchy of elite cities, but to indicate areas of opportunity. All cities continue to make progress on their missions to become more sustainable economically, environmentally and for the good of their inhabitants. As the world continues to become more reliant on its urban centers [sic], it is our hope that city leaders and industry find this a valuable tool in assessing their priorities and pathways to urban sustainability for the good of all.”

At the other end of the spectrum Cairo and Kolkata were named the worst performers, with their scores hurt by a lack of economic development and poor progress on environmental factors such as energy efficiency, carbon emissions, air quality and access to urban green spaces.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Zurich ranked world’s most sustainable city

A clear link between economic development and environmental sustainability is apparent,” the accompanying report notes. “Therefore, cities in advanced economies are largely at the top while those in emerging and developing economies tend to cluster towards the bottom.”

In the UK, London’s place at number five in the rankings was driven by its position as an economic powerhouse, and its wealth of green spaces – London has more than 3,000 parks and green spaces, making it one of the greenest capitals in the world.

Meanwhile, US cities tended to score lower in the rankings against their European counterparts due to their higher per capita carbon emissions and lower amount of green spaces. San Francisco and Los Angeles, for example, scored 53rd and 60th respectively, well below major European rivals.

The pair ascended the mountain using wooden blocks with handle grips to walk and rest on.

Following over five hours of climbing, the pair arrived at a 900-metre high site at Mount Lao. The mixed terrain included steep sandy inclines and a number of stone steps.

Both of the climbers lost their legs in separate accidents when they were young. Having seen news about his past climbing efforts, Gao Zhiyu invited his hero to make the attempt with him, who gladly obliged to the delight of the 11-year old.

Chen is also a singer and a climber who has conquered over 100 peaks nationwide.
