Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

[Wanderlust Tips October 2019] Brunei is not one of the must-visit destinations on many travel itineraries to Southeast Asian countries, however, I decided to visit to fulfill my ambition of visiting more off-of-the-beaten-track countries.

When thinking of Brunei, the first thing that springs to mind is that the country is an infamous, wealthy and isolated oil kingdom and tourism is not its strength. Nevertheless, you could hear stories 1000 times but they do not equate to seeing the city with your own eyes once. Great writer Mark Twain once said, “Moving will kill prejudice, stubbornness and selfishness” and my trip to Brunei proved that what he said was true.

AN INCREDIBLE ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE

It can be said that the most striking thing about travelling to Brunei is the Islamic architectural works and iconic culture. I have learnt about Islam through my Central Asian friends. Even when I travelled to Indonesia, a country that has the largest Muslim population in the world, I still did not fully understand or appreciate its unique culture. Arriving at Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan international airport at midnight, I caught sight of an impressive mosque located close to the airport. The mosque serves as a reminder of the Islamic beauty to all tourists.

I spend most of my time living slowly and enjoying a thrilling life in this beautiful city. Spanning an area of 100.4sq. km with a population of only 100,700 people, the little city boasts a peaceful atmosphere compared to many other capitals I have travelled to. The locals are educated thoroughly and religion is at the forefront of their lifestyles. I was surprised and impressed with Jame ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, the first mosque I visited during my trip because there were so many pupils and students taking graduation photos.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

In the afternoon, I also took a stroll around the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Interestingly, I also encountered many female students holding their diplomas and taking photos in Islamic dresses with brilliant smiles across their faces. If you are interested in the Islamic culture in Brunei, visiting the mosques is the best way to broaden your horizon.

Jame ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque was located a stone’s throw from my accommodation, so I decided to take a stroll around. It is also one of the two national mosques in Brunei. With the largest area in Brunei framed with 29 golden domes and a huge campus, the mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 people for prayers. Nevertheless, if it’s the wow factor you’re looking for then Omar Ali Saifuddien really impresses every visitor. It is named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III – the 28th Sultan of Brunei, who initiated its construction.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

The magnificent architecture of the Omar Ali Saifuddien dominated the skyline of Bandar Seri Begawan. The building was completed in 1958 and is a spectacular example of contemporary Islamic architecture. In addition to these two national mosques, I also explored other Islamic architectural masterpieces in Bandar Seri Begawan. This city is home to many impressive Islamic structures. For instance, the Ash Shaliheen Mosque located alongside the Prime Minister’s Office is the prayer venue for heads of state and staff in the office.

The mosque sometimes prohibits visitors from going inside if the heads of state are in prayer. The site is quite isolated and far away from the city centre, but the architecture is still impressive. The Ash Shaliheen Mosque was constructed in a Moroccan style in a sandy colour with a harlequin roof and was completed in 2012. Before waving goodbye to Brunei, I visited and admired the spectacular architecture of the mosque at the international airport. This small mosque has a large blue dome and three stupas. Although the mosque does not open to tourists, you can still admire the exterior and take some stunning photos from the outside. The second floor of the airport is the best place to take a panoramic photo of the structure.

THE BEAUTY OF LOCAL CULTURE

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

After the spending two days strolling around the iconic mosques, I spent the third day on my travel itinerary visiting Kampong Ayer (meaning the water village in Malaysian). From the wharf at the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, I paid one Brunei dollar to cross the river to Kampong Ayer. It consists of a cluster of traditional stilted villages built on the Brunei River, mainly located in the vicinity of Pusat Bandar.

Commonly called the “Venice of the East”, the Kampong Ayer has historically been the principal settlement of the Bruneian Empire for a few centuries, but officially vanished in the early period during British imperialism in Brunei. It is said that many people are not fond of this shabby residential area which is traditionally inhabited by the poorer locals. Here, you could see children going to school over a wooden bridge, their settlements and even schools were built on stone stakes. The local people freely decorate each house with a different colour depending on their preferences.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

Most impressively, the residents do not need to cross the river to the city centre because of an amazing variety of public structures. For instance, parks, museums, schools, mosques built on wooden pillars are available and meet all of their requirements. If you have a true passion for photography, especially human and culture, the Kampong Ayer is a truly perfect canvas for snapping many authentic artistic photographs of daily life. Catch a glimpse of children on the way to school, the elderly sitting leisurely on the sidewalk, a man diving in the muddy waters to fix a canoe or cats who do not care for passers-by sprawled across the gas pipes.

My friend and I were fascinated here, so we spent the whole day wandering around this maze of wooden structures. Whenever we felt sleepy and wanted to return to the city centre, we just needed to wave down a motorboat as there is an array of wooden ladders down to the water’s edge in Kampong Ayer. Kampong Ayer is extremely beautiful at sunset with a myriad of brilliant colours painting the sky in pink and orange contrasting with the wooden houses on the ground. Sitting on the canoe, Kampong Ayer gradually disappeared and the modern city centre appeared again before my eyes.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

On arriving back in the city, we went on a search for dinner. Gadong night market is the first dining venue to spring to my mind. After a ten-minute bus journey from the water’s edge, I reached Gadong. A far cry from the quiet and serene the Kampong Ayer, the Gadong night market impressed me with its hectic and bustling atmosphere. Located alongside the market, The Mall – the biggest mall in Brunei is buzzing with people toing and froing. Obviously, this night market is not as large and well known as the infamous night markets in Taiwan. However, the sharp contrast between the peaceful streets of Brunei and inside the Gadong market has surprised many people.

Although the market has existed for many years, it used to be a makeshift market with tents set up in the parking lot on the side of the market. Today, the night market has been transformed into a long-term market, having opened in early 2017 and officially named in Malaysian – Pasar Pelbagai Barangan Gadong. Take a stroll around the night market and you will have the opportunity to embark on a unique culinary journey, taste beef Soto, lamb kebab skewers served with delicious spicy tamarind sauce and Roti John (an omelette sandwich dish served with mayonnaise and ketchup). The items here are generally inexpensive costing between BND1 and BND4. The opening hours are from 4 pm to 10 pm. In the morning, the market mainly sells bonsai and fruits.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

According to the 2020 calendar, Ramadan begins from 23rd April to 23rd May 2020. During this time, it is more difficult to find food due to restaurant closures. It is recommended to visit Brunei at a different time to really get the most out of your experience.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

TRAVEL TO BRUNEI

>> From Saigon: You can take a long-haul flight with Royal Brunei Airlines. My round-trip air ticket cost VND6 million, the price included meals, 30kg of luggage and access to a television screen during the flight. Alternatively, you can also opt for other transit flights. For instance, you can take a transit flight in Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia or in Singapore with Singapore Airlines. The AirAsia tickets cost around VND4,5 to VND5 million excluding luggage.

>> From Hanoi: You can only opt for a transit flight with AirAsia or Singapore Airlines.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

TRAVEL AROUND BRUNEI

Do not rely on public transportation as bus transport can be extremely unreliable. Instead, it is recommended to take a taxi or travel on foot. Taxis can also be extremely difficult to catch because Bruneian tourism has not yet developed, thus, taxis are mainly spontaneous cars. When I waited at a bus stop, a car driver came and asked me where I wanted to go, then I got in the car and was transported to the place for BND5.

From the airport to the hotel, I managed to find a car for BND15/way. After the first day of transportation issues, I decided to ask the hotel staff how to order a taxi, so they advised me to download the “Dart Rider” app. This ride-hailing app resembles Grab in Vietnam. You can travel to many places in the city for approximately BND5. It only cost me BND9 to go from my hotel to the airport, it is a lot cheaper than taking a taxi on the road.

CURRENCY

In Brunei, people use the Brunei dollar (Currency code: BND), which is interchangeable with the Singapore dollar at par. BND1 ~ VND17,200. Occasionally, USD and Singapore dollar is accepted. You can exchange the Singapore dollars in Vietnam and there is no place to exchange the Brunei dollars in Vietnam.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

ACCOMMODATION

In Bandar Seri Begawan, an array of hotels ranging from luxury to budget are available. I opted for the Higher Hotel at the price of VND950,000/night for 2 pax, the rooms were quite modern. There were convenience stores and local restaurants nearby and the hotel provided an easy transportation service. These services are essential here because the city has not developed in terms of tourism, the shops often close early and moving around the city can be very difficult.

Wanderlust Tips | Brunei: The iconic Islamic beauty in the heart of Southeast Asia

FINE DINING SITES

Bandar Seri Begawan is not a tourist city and you can count the number of food and beverage outlets on one hand. However, you can still find delicious dining venues with reasonable prices. Recommended popular some dining sites:

>> Gadong night market: If you are excited about traditional Bruneian food, visiting the market is a must.

>> Thien Thien Restaurant Kiulap specialises in serving Chinese, Malaysian and Bruneian culinary delicacies. Notably, chicken rice is a must-try dish.

>> Located on the 2nd floor of Seri Q-Lap Mall, Le Keris Cafe & Restaurant offers a diversity of European – Asian fusion cuisine. If you have had enough of Bruneian delicacies, you can experience different flavours here.

> > Farmbasket Kopitiam: I found this restaurant by chance when I accidentally went to the back of my hotel. The food here is delicious and rich, especially the salted egg sauce dishes. Three Color Rice Rendang Chicken and Nusi, Kerabu Salted Egg Ayam Penyet are two must-try exceptional delicacies here. >> Picolo Cafe: This lovely cafe has two branches located alongside the river near Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Lavender Latte is a must-try drink when visiting here.

>> Excapade Japanese Cuisine: I decided to eat Japanese food on my last day in Brunei. I was impressed with the diverse menu, creative cooking and affordable price of VND700,000/meal for 2 pax.

I am impressed by its vibrant landscape, which changes dramatically from the North to the South. The country attracts both leisure and business travellers with city hotels, beach resorts and even mountain retreat destinations. For me, Vietnam is still home to many more hidden gems.

Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

[Wanderlust Tips October 2019] More than 1,400 years ago, there was a place that was only home to many sandy deserts affected solely by the sunshine and wind. However, this place has been found to feature a rich oil resource worth an exorbitant amount of money. More than 1,400 years ago, people here broke the border to unite the tribes together, created a brilliant civilisation and practised a collective religion. Afterwards, this land was divided again, it became isolated and was ruled under the strict laws. It is the Arabian Peninsula – a land of unimaginable changes, ancient history, distinctive culture, diverse religion and many mysteries that many travellers desire to explore.
[rpi]

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

ARABIAN PENINSULA, THE FLORAL MOTIFS CARVED IN STONE

The Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world, located in Southwest Asia, comprising of Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and parts of Jordan and Iraq. The terrain is mostly mountains and deserts, dry coastlines and stretching swamps. Sometimes, the sparse grasslands can be found on the oases. During the daytime, it is boiling hot and the burning sand scorched by the sunshine is carried by the desert winds. Due to the scorching conditions, the locals often opt for the long outfits that cover their whole body.

When night falls, the temperature drops and the difference is unbelievable, sometimes it drops to 0°C and can be very cold. These harsh conditions have constrained the development of this area, thus the Arabian Peninsula has a sparse population and some countries have an undeveloped economy. During the tribal era, most people lived on the oases. The two neighbouring lands are home to far more developed societies, including the Egyptian civilisation and the Mesopotamian civilisation. Historically, most civilisations in the world have relied on large rivers to provide fertile land and abundant irrigation systems for their agricultural purposes.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

These elements are a prerequisite for developing a prosperous civilised society. For instance, the Egyptian civilisation has the Nile river, the Mesopotamian civilisation has the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, the Indian civilisation has the Indian and Ganges rivers and the Chinese civilisation has the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, the Arabian Peninsula does not have the favourable natural climatic conditions, nor large rivers for economic development. However, the place was blessed with an ideal geographical position. Located on the trade route between Asia, Africa and Europe, the area has great opportunities for trade. The ancient Arabian Peninsula was predominantly inhabited by the Semitic hunters and nomadic people. They were acclimatised to the wind and sunshine as well as the terrain here.

Thanks to that, when the Arabian Peninsula became a bridge connecting the major civilisations, the locals began to transport goods across the desert and sought to develop their commercial business. Before Muhammad unified the Arabian Peninsula and Islam became the main religion, the social and political organisations in the Arabian Peninsula were mainly clans and tribes. Due to the difficult transportation, these tribes often lived separately from each other and were autonomous in terms of economy, culture, religion and politics.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

There were many wars amongst the tribes over territory and invasion of the surrounding lands. Prior to Islam becoming the main religion, the Arabians worshipped countless gods including the stars, the moon, the earth and the sacred stones. La Mecque, commonly called Mecca is the epicentre of Islamic worship. Located on the west coast and only about 60km from the Red Sea, this famous religious site has become a stopping point for the merchants and passers-by to rest and pray at the Kaaba temple which is home to the sacred black stone wall.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD, ISLAM AND THE FORMATION OF ARAB CIVILISATION

Muhammad was born into a noble family. His father died before he was born, afterwards, his mother passed away when he was six years old. Later, Muhammad went to live with his grandfather and uncle. There are not many detailed documents written about his youth. However, it is said that since his childhood, Muhammad followed the merchants, travelled to many different places and had the opportunity to learn and interact with many different religions, typically Judaism and Christianity. During this time, he realised that the turbulence in the Arabian Peninsula was caused by the political and religious division, so it was necessary to enact a new religion to unify as well as combining all tribes into a thriving nation.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

Legend has it that Muhammad dreamt of the archangel Gabriel who appeared in his dreams and was the basis for Muhammad’s revelations. In the following years, he declared that he is a prophet whose work would be to take care of Arabs. It is believed that in 610, Muhammad enacted the Islamic faith and worshipped Allah in Mecca. Muhammad had gradually held an imperative position in the Arabian community and the practising the Muslims began to rise. When monks and nobles in Mecca realised that their benefits were affected, they attempted to find Mohammed to kill him.

In 622, he fled north from Mecca to Yathrib, 400km away from Mecca. The city was later renamed Medina and became the second Islamic holy place, after Mecca. Apart from the above two cities, Jerusalem in Israel is considered the third holy place. Legend has it that Mohammed felt an affinity with Yathrib and thought that in a previous life he had been there. The Borak horse waited for him at the foot of the Wailing Wall in the destroyed Jewish temple to lift him up into the sky. This land is today known as the sacred land because it is the gathering place of three major religions including Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

In Yathrib, Mohammed distributed his wealth to the people, this generosity made him well known and in turn promoted the Islamic faith. Many tribes and nobles also began to respond in the large numbers. Even the aristocrats who had ever opposed to Muhammad in Mecca also surrendered, the Arabian Peninsula gradually united, converged into one organisation and flourished. The Islamic faith has a huge amount of influence over three continents including Asia, Europe and Africa. This population accounts for half of the Asian countries included in the Byzantine Empire, Persia, Egypt, a large part of North Africa and Spain.

The development of the Arabian Peninsula was then considered one of the most exotic developments in medieval history, as a result, a large area of the Mediterranean was occupied by Arabians. It is undeniable that economic development has led to the strong progress of the other aspects of society, creating a brilliant civilisation with many achievements.

FROM THE GOLDEN AGE UNTIL THE DAY OF SEPARATION

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

The Arabian civilisation was born later than the other ancient civilisations, so its achievements were built based on inheritance and creativity of the previous civilisations. The Islamic faith created a basis for unifying the Arabian Peninsula. The development also expanded the territory and Islam has gradually become an international religion. Since its inception, the Islamic faith has developed rapidly. The Islam became popular in the Middle East, converted the Persian empire and repelled the Roman empire toward Europe, spreading across three continents and reaching the climax of the civilisation and technology in the 13th century while Europe was still immersed in the medieval culture.

With an over-1,400-year history, like all other religions, the origins and traditions of the Islamic faith are divided into various branches for an array of different religious purposes. It is undeniable that Islam has greatly influenced the development of Arabic literature. The Qur’an is considered the first and most famous literary work, which is also an important holy testament of the Islamic faith. Additionally, “One Thousand and One Nights” is a world-class masterpiece. Some popular literary works including “Aladdin and the magic lamp”, “The adventures of Sindbad the sailor” and “Ali Baba and the forty thieves” have become the childhood tales for many children all over the world.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

What’s more, a lot of basic knowledge in mathematics, from algebra to geometry, the decimal system, cubic and quadratic equations, trigonometry, concepts of sin, cosine, tan, cotangent are all great achievements of the Arabian mathematicians, based on learning from Indians for their development and creativity. Notably, the Arabian Peninsula has excellently preserved and spread the Eastern and Western cultural achievements. For instance, Chinese papermaking, gunpowder, compasses and printing techniques are widely promoted in Europe while many philosophical Greek and Romanian works have been introduced in Eastern countries.

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Arabian Civilisation: The rise of an empire

The Arabian Peninsula has strict Islamic laws, but it is still strongly influenced by a diversity of cultures, including tribes. Since Muhammad unified the peninsula, there still have been many battles. When the Islamic faith started to lose ownership of the Ottoman Empire, now known as Turkey, a country that spans three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa, to the French and the British, the people here were quick to rebel against the Turkish government. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the other major countries began to share their land and colonies, opening the borders to facilitate governance. The Arabian Peninsula has seemingly undergone a journey from partition to unification and finally returning to its original separation.

PHAM THI THU THAO – HOTEL MANAGEMENT, BEIJING | CHINA WAS JUST A BEAUTIFUL DREAM

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Share the love: Awestruck by Asia

Since my childhood, I have always dreamt of visiting China. Currently, I have moved to Beijing for work and my dream has come true. China is a vast country, spanning many complicated terrains with an extremely diverse climate. Therefore, it is home to an abundance of stunning landscapes and rich culture. Travelling through different cities gave me a diverse insight into the country.

I spent many years exploring an amazing variety of destinations in China, for instance, Qinghai, Tianjin, Suzhou, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu and Harbin. Most recently, I visited Xinjiang but I still have not discovered all of the cities in this vast country. Beijing and Shanghai are particularly notable for their high-rise buildings and hectic growth, but Xinjiang impressed me with its stunningly beautiful natural scenery. I was completely taken aback by the magnificent scenery and I was honestly speechless because the views were picture-perfect.

The lush green pastures, dazzling sunflower fields, winding jade-green river, herds of cattle, sheep and horses grazing leisurely and a spectacular sunset. Not only can you marvel at the natural beauty of the area but you can also participate in an array of experiences in Xinjiang including dancing with the locals in Grand Bazaar, camping, picking mushrooms and enjoying tea. After my amazing visit to Xinjiang, I will take a second trip to the beautiful Harbin. Notably, Chinese food does not entirely match the Vietnamese palette, but you will not be able to resist its tempting flavours.

LE KHANH HIEP – BUSINESS, HANOI | A HARSH AND MAJESTIC MONGOLIA

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Share the love: Awestruck by Asia

I was impressed by the Mongolian culture as the country is notable for its long history and rich traditions. Mongolian people often live in small groups, each group characterised by a different lifestyle, cuisine and customs. For example, after my trip to visit the Tsaatan and Kazakh ethnic groups, my curiosity got the better of me and I felt inspired to explore and challenge my limits.

The Mongolian countryside features fresh air, but the climate is radically cold and harsh. Additionally, the Mongolian autonomous region is rather complex, so transportation is not easy for many tourists. Nevertheless, your efforts will be totally worth it when you come here. During my Mongolian adventure, I was blown away by the experience of sleeping in a tent of Kazakh eagle hunters.

I called this experience “sleeping in the fridge” because the temperature dropped to -30oC. I put a bottle of water in bed and it was frozen the following morning. More memorably, I switched the heating on while closing the tent, as a result, I felt like I might suffocate. After my trip to Mongolia, I was most proud to become a valedictorian of the photography department at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema thanks to my stunning photos of Mongolia. My biggest regret is that I did not film many beautiful scenes of this land.

TRINH THI MAI – SOCIAL MEDIA, HANOI | A SPECIAL MARK FROM NEPAL

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Share the love: Awestruck by Asia

Up to now, I have had the opportunity to visit some Asian countries, for instance, Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia and Nepal. The most memorable trip was to Nepal, as this was not only the longest but also the most arduous journey to Annapurna Base Camp. Nepal is also home to the most spectacular views and the harshest climate I have ever experienced. The Nepalese weather was very cold in the mountains, so we often had to get up very early to prepare for the next leg of the journey.

A far cry from China or Japan, Nepal is home to many unique features leaving me with a sense of freedom, simplicity and generosity. Even with the icy temperatures, I appreciated the peaceful ambience when admiring the sparkling galaxy. I felt tears in my eyes when witnessing the majestic beauty of the Himalayas or Annapurna with the old azalea forests adorned in red blooms. Nepal attracts travel enthusiasts with its dusty experiences and distinctive pious culture.

I feel like the Nepalese people do not put money first. Their shops often open late in the mornings and close early in the evenings. They also visit the temples for ceremonies in the afternoon. When they pass away, their bodies are burnt in front of many people. Perhaps their happiness is based not so much on money but on freedom and fulfilment. I wish I could return to Nepal to discover the Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit because Nepal has so many interesting things to discover, conquer and admire.

PHAN THI DIEU HUONG – ACCOUNTANT, HUNG YEN | AN EXOTIC FASCINATING SIDE TO DUBAI

Wanderlust Tips magazine | Share the love: Awestruck by Asia

Dubai is completely different from the other countries I have ever travelled to. The place is not known for the stunningly beautiful landscapes like Suzhou, Hangzhou in China or the craziness of the bustling markets in Bangkok Thailand, instead Dubai holds its own identity as an ultra-modern city surrounded by a vast desert. In Dubai, the traditional Eastern temples are no longer popular. You will encounter a whole host of the Persian-style churches resembling the castles in the masterpiece “One Thousand and One Nights”.

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates. The Islamic country is a far cry from the other Northeast Asian and Southeast Asian countries particularly with regards to the lifestyle, custom and traditions. These differences really made me surprised. The unique Emirati identity is derived from these interesting differences. I had an incredible time for travelling in a terrain car across the sand dunes, riding camels on safari in the afternoons and enjoying a delicious dinner under a starry sky.

I was also intrigued by the traditional Emirati dress. Almost Emirati women opt for the discreet outfits, some people wear clothing which only shows their eyes. I really appreciated the femininity through their stunning yet somewhat mysterious dress after I had tried a traditional outfit. I was also extremely impressed by the wealth and luxury of the Emirati people. Though not a producer of gold, this precious metal is used widely in the daily life of the Emirati people, you can easily find an amazing variety of golden products, for instance, jewellery or tapestries woven from the golden threads.
