Reconstructed Tuong Long Pagoda unveiled in Hai Phong

A reconstruction of the Tuong Long Pagoda, which was built in 1058 under the reign of Emperor Thanh Tong of the Ly Dynasty, was unveiled in the northern city of Hai Phong on 19th November.

[rpi]

Chairman Hoang Xuan Minh of Do Son district, where the structure is located, said that the reconstruction work began in June 2008 and included a nine-storey pagoda placed on a square base with four stairs.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Reconstructed Tuong Long Pagoda unveiled in Hai Phong

Inside the pagoda is an Amitabha Buddha statue sitting on a stone lotus base, while the area next to the pagoda is a stele house and an excavation site for storing many wooden and stone artefacts bearing the typical patterns of the Ly Dynasty. The remains of the original structure were already recognised as national heritage.

According to historical records, Emperor Thanh Tong ordered the construction of a pagoda when visiting the Do Son area and named it Tuong Long, meaning Auspicious Dragon after having a vision of a golden dragon in his dream. The original pagoda was 45 metres tall and built on top of hill roughly 100 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest towers at the time of its completion. In the past, Tuong Long was also used as a watch tower as part of an information transmission system in order to send warnings to the capital city if any suspicious foreign activities were detected offshore.

Since its construction nearly one thousand years ago, the pagoda underwent many renovations under the Tran and Le Dynasties but was demolished in the early 1800s to obtain bricks for the construction of the Citadel of Hai Duong.

Conversation with Carl Gagnon: General Manager of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon

Carl Gagnon, general manager of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon, with 14 years of experience working at AccorHotels, shares his thoughts with Wanderlust Tips travel magazine on the Hôtel Des Arts Saigon.

[rpi]

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | onversation with Carl Gagnon: General Manager of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon

After 14 years with AccorHotels, and one year with Hôtel Des Arts Saigon, what common values do you think Hôtel des Arts Saigon shares with other hotels in the chain? What makes it different and distinctive from others?

Accorhotels has 4,200 hotels in the world in over 100 countries with 27 brands that range from economy to mid-scale, upscale, upper upscale, and luxury. With a large number of brands all across the globe in very different market places, the common value is always “Feel welcome”. And this idea is in the spirit to make our guests feel appreciated, recognised and valued whether it is a luxury hotel or a budget hotel.

Every brand has their own character and specificity which contribute to AccorHotels’s beauty. As  for MGallery hotels, we have three different character pillar including Signature, Serenity and Heritage. Our owner chose the fundermental pillars of the hotel to be a lifestyle, design boutique property with a story to tell. This is what we are and what makes us different from others. We are seen as the first international boutique hotel in this exciting city of Vietnam.

In regards to Vietnam’s rising hospitality industry, what would you think the vital elements to successfully positioning a hotel in this market are?

First, it is crucial to have a strategic location for your property. Hôtel des Arts Saigon is situated in the heart of Saigon and right in the business hub. The hotel is also walking distance to all the key tourist  attractions such as the Reunification palace, the iconic City Post Office, the Cathedral, and the Opera House. That makes it more appealing to travellers whether it comes to international business or bleisure market. Then, I would say the ambience in the hotel, which is important in order to provide guests with different set-up atmostpheres. You need a mix of quiet or lively settings. So it is essential to offer guests options that they can choose from. We will ensure to have everything they may need in one place.

It is nice that you can find cosy corners in the hotel where you can relax with an intimate setting like the spa or have your own privacy in the exclusive area of our Executive Sky Lounge. Or sometimes you would like to find a place where you can enjoy a drink with a good vibe or nice ambience, for example in Hotel des Art Saigon you can visit our iconic Social Club rooftop pool bar with live DJ playing every night along with amazing mixology.

Last but not least, it is also important to have the key influencers of the city or the country to really endorse your hotel to be the place where they feel good to come, where they can feel their space is respected during their stay.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | onversation with Carl Gagnon: General Manager of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon

What have you been doing to maintain the “East Meets West” experience of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon to all guests staying at this “very chic” hotel?

It’s the DNA of our already existing brands whether it’s Sofitel or MGallery, to take the best of the French “Art de Vivre” and fuse it with the essence of the distinctive local flavour, which is Vietnam in our case. So it’s “France meets Vietnam”. There is a long history of the French in Vietnam, some good and some not so good times. But still there is a nice romance that stays with it from the early centuries of Vietnam and that is where the inspiration of the design of the hotel comes from. Here the Vietnamese are moving forward but they have kept the best “souvenirs” from that period, the good mementos with beautiful and chic influence in terms of culture, lifestyle, cuisine, architecture and arts. Even some of the paintings in our hotel are from a very famous Vietnamese artist of that period, Vu Cao Dam who made “des Beaux-Arts” in Paris.

How can the staff play a key role to create “an authentic, refined experience, with a bespoke approach that integrates the most extraordinary aspects of ‘East meets West’ hospitality”?

The common difficulty with hotels in the modern market is that many hotels are standardized regarding the operating procedures. When there is any unexpected situation, then nobody would know how to take the action or who would be responsible for making decisions.

Therefore, it is key to allow people to be themselves. We have Vietnamese as well as expatriate specialists working with us and they all bring diverse contributions to the hotel with their own personalities. However, we need to make sure they all understand the objectives, values that a luxury hotel requires, the expectations of the clients in luxury hotels and then to stimulate in the sense of creativity, and to understand the international standard. This is where we see the “East meets West” aspect of hospitality.

Accorhotels have just launched the ‘Heartist Programme’ that aims to create the emotional bound between the staff and the guests without strict guidelines but rather tailor made one-on-one service with sincerity. It’s also about a personal and refined experience. When your staffs are able to be themselves, they can provide a bespoke service from the heart in full authenticity.

What is the spirit of art demonstrated in every guest’s experience at Hôtel Des Arts Saigon?

We always strive to celebrate artistry in all its forms in the hotel as its name: Hôtel des Arts means the hotel of arts. Guests can actually experience the spirit of art right from their first step into the hotel through our curated paintings and antique collection displayed on the walls along the lobby and hall ways handpicked by our owner. However, that is just the physical part of it.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | onversation with Carl Gagnon: General Manager of Hôtel Des Arts Saigon

We also host many artistic events in the hotel for our guests such as having famous local diva singers, fashion shows from top local designers or international music performances from foreign artists. That is the art that comes to life, not just art on canvas or on a wall.

There is another form of art that people can only feel through our staff, our services as well as the atmosphere of the hotel; or through a culinary journey that brings art to your dishes presenting “Art de Recevoir” and “Art de la Table”.

With such a dominant sense of art, what kind of art events can guests expect to enjoy at the hotel?

We have hosted fashion shows and art exhibitions of the country and abroad quarterly. We have frequent savoury events where guests can expect to dine with international Michelin starred chefs offering high-end gourmet cuisine on a yearly basis.

Recently we have hornourly hosted an exclusive wine dinner with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who is known all around the world through his ownership of Château Mouton- Rothschild. This is not just a normal wine and dine event as this partner of ours does not just make wine but rather makes arts with their business. Our guests have an experience of a lifetime tasting one of the most premium Grand Cru wines and millésime champagne. For their Mouton Grand Cru wine, every year, on they select a fine painting from a very famous painter to make the lable of the bottle.

We are planning for forthcoming event with worldwide famous crystal house Lalique. They have created artsy products for top brands such as Mont Blanc, Bentley, Jaguar to name a few. Though I would not reveal too much, this event will be a prestige for us all to experience their artsy pieces and also to enjoy the renowned cocktail named Sweetz created by Vignobles Silvio Denz and their renowned Sauternes label Lafaurie-Peyraguey.

About the support for artists, how has Hôtel Des Arts Saigon been doing to assist local and international artists as well as to improve the art scene in Vietnam?

In my opinion, Vietnamese artists in general do not need our support as I believe they are already in a good shape. But some of them are more like friends of the hotel, they love to stay with us and we respect them as well as their expectations or demands.

We currently care more about the new generations, young artists that might need support from us. We have a major project in Vietnam to find young talents that will soon walk the red carpet in the future, which also I might keep confidential at this time. In general, we always do our best to be a part of the artist community in Vietnam and bring it to the world.

Thank you for joining us in this interview. We wish you have a great journey with Hôtel des Arts Saigon.

Travelling around the world by a bicycle

After a few trips with my Scotland friend to the Mekong Delta with the distance of less than 100 kilometres each trip, one day I was asked by him “Would you like to ride with me from Vietnam to Paris?”  I nodded without hesitation because it was a chance for me to fulfill my dream to travel and explore the world no matter which mode of transportation I would choose.

[rpi]

Then we started the journey of more than 15,000 kilometres across twelve countries stretching from Asia to Europe, from smooth and flat to rough and mountainous roads that pushed us to the abyss. Highlights included over-3,800-metre Torugart mountain peak where it snowed heavily in the middle of the summer in Kyrgyzstan and the burning Karakum Desert (black sand) in the middle of July in Turkmenistan, and our destination was not Paris but London for the Christmas season.

After the trip of a lifetime, we returned to Vietnam to continue our journey to eight Southeast Asian countries in 154 days, completing near the end of June 2017.With just a bicycle, all the roads connecting the continents seem to become shorter.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Travelling around the world by a bicycle

PREPARING FOR THE RIDE

People often think that in order to travel around the world, we need to buy fancy bikes, but I think there is no need for expensive touring bikes; instead, I chose a Windspeed bike for only 13 million VND. If two people travel together, it is recommended to choose the same kind of bikes to easily carry the spares and repairing tools. However, we could not find two bikes of the same brand, so we had to buy a new Windspeed bike and a second-hand Surly brand. Besides the bicycles, there are a lot of other things to prepare:

  • Repair tools kits, pump, tire, tube, and spare spokes.
  • Waterproof roll-top panniers made by Ortleib are suitable for bike packing trips. If you have to carry a lot of stuff, you should take two more Ortlieb’s front panniers to help balance the weight in the front.
  • For a long cycling ride through multiple terrains, the bicycle saddle is extremely important. It is recommended to choose a soft saddle to protect your butt, and if you have enough money, you should buy the Brooks’ saddles – the type of leather bicycle saddle that will provide natural “give” by stretching and flexing. If not you can buy saddle pads.
  • Before each trip, take into account the distance and learn about the area, especially deserts, to take sufficient water, dried foods, tires, and tubes. When crossing the desert in Xinjiang and Turkmenistan, we could not carry much water, and because I did not drink enough water in the extremely hot weather, I had a terrible headache which was really dangerous.
  • Clothing: The less you carry, the lighter your cycling will be. Watch the weather at your place of arrival to consider taking appropriate clothes.
  • Bring tents and cooking stoves. Always store some instant noodles to cook in areas where you cannot find a restaurant.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Travelling around the world by a bicycle

HANDLE SOME UNEXPECTED INCIDENTS

Flat tire: When the tire of the bike gets punctured by a spike or nail, which happens quite often, the tube needs to be replaced. This process is quite simple.

Chain breaking when riding down the pass: In case the chain breaks while on the pass, you should keep calm, keep going and think that the chain is not necessary when riding down the pass. It is important to squeeze the brake slowly and steadily. Use the bottom of your shoes to help slow down and squeeze the brake to reduce speed.

Brakes failing while going down a steep hill or mountain:  In this case, staying calm is a life-saving weapon. Keep riding, tightly hold the handlebars, and try to let your foot hit the road slowly then forcefully, and calmly stop the bike. Then you can repair the brake, in the worse case you should walk the bike, go hitchhiking to the nearest hotel or repair store.

CYCLING TIME

On average, we ride 75 kilometres per day, and my speed is about 12 kilometres per hour only. The most suitable time to start is the early morning. We usually get up at 5am, eat breakfast, clean the tent, and leave at 5.30am – 6.00am. We will stop at about 10am to rest for 30 minutes, then continue to ride till noon. We take a rest until 1pm or 1.30pm to avoid the hottest time of the day, ride to a hotel or find the campground before the sunset.

Particularly in the Turkmestan desert area, the temperature is rather high at 45 degree Celcius, so it is better to start riding at 4am, take a break from 1pm to 2pm when the temperature reaches the highest point before continuing the ride. In the Xinjiang desert, we ride until 7pm because in this area the sun sets at 10pm.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Travelling around the world by a bicycle

EATING

On average, you should try to eat more calories by adding bananas, fruits or sweets every 30 minutes. Never let yourself get too hungry or it will leave you feeling exhausted. Carrying a lot of water will make the bike heavy as well as cause you to lose more energy while riding, so it is important to consider the amount of water to carry. We usually carry about 2-3 liters of water if there are many places to buy in the area. However, when riding through remote areas we often carry 5 liters of water. With three to four 1.5-liter bottles.

MAINTENANCE

Regularly lubricate the bike, especially after rain and check the brakes before taking routes through mountainous areas.

Travel insurance: Safeguard for the journeys

Though accounting for a few percent of the travel expenses, travel insurance is considered the “second most important safeguard after passport”, which plays a crucial role when travellers face unwanted problems during their journey. Is travel insurance really important? What are the benefits of purchasing travel insurance? Which type of travel insurance should be chosen? Those are questions that not every visitor can answer.

[rpi]

Wanderlust Tips | Travel insurance: Safeguard for the journeys

UNEXPECTED SCENARIOS

Travelling is a great time for life experience and enjoyment. However, not every journey has a perfect start and end. Not long ago, the case of Ali Aldoh, a 22-year-old Egyptian girl who was robbed right in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City caused a commotion. She panicked and burst into tears as all of her personal papers and belongings were stolen.

You can take precautions against the risks mentioned above; however, there are some risks that are unavoidable. For example, the 7-magnitude earthquake in Jiuzhaigou led to this Elysium on earth being temporarily closed. Visitors who had booked tours and hotels in this area were faced with a real dilemma. Not only did they have to stop the journey, but they also had to deal with major difficulties in procedures as well as expenses of tours and hotel reservations postponement or cancellation.

There are many kinds of risks, and you may expect someone to shoulder the responsibility with you when you get into trouble. In the UK, the expenses for travel insurance is about GBP32 per person per year (equivalent to VND985,000), while the average cost per insurance claim is up to GBP1,022 (equivalent to VND31,475,000). Statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) released in 2015 has shown that insurance companies have paid for at least GBP370 million for more than 580,000 claims from travellers experiencing a problem abroad.

For many people, however, this kind of insurance is… unnecessary. According to the US Travel Insurance Association, only 30 percent of Americans buy travel insurance, while this figure in Australia is about 70 percent (according to the 2012 statistics of Australian Bureau of Statistics, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade); and in England, the figure is about 76 percent (based on 2012 statistics of FCO).

Meanwhile, in Vietnam, for travellers going on tour, the 2005 Law on Tourism specifies the obligations of international travel agents to buy tourism insurance for their clients when they take outbound trips. As for domestic tours, this is not compulsory unless there are requests from the tourists. Many travel operators do not provide any guidance and information about travel insurance for customers when they clearly do not know their rights. Since most of the domestic tours are scheduled in a short time, Vietnamese tourists take travel insurance lightly as they only care about the price instead of the safety and possible risks that might happen during the journey.

Even Tuan Anh – the journalist who has travelled to all provinces in the North of Vietnam and set the goal to climb at least one of the top 10 highest mountain peaks during the challenging cloudy months – has never bought or considered buying travel insurance. “I usually take short trips; sometimes my motorbike broke down on the way or I encountered some other troubles. However, I do not think that I need to buy travel insurance,” said Tuan Anh.

Wanderlust Tips | Travel insurance: Safeguard for the journeys

There are some people like Nguyen Hoang, who is a member of the Backpacking forum. He travels a lot; however, as he thought travel insurance is costly and unnecessary, he did not buy any. Until his arm was broken while climbing Bach Moc Luong Tu did he realize that travel insurance was very important and that the expenses for travel insurance were much less than what he had expected.

Representatives of Bao Viet Holdings said that although the awareness of customers about travel insurance is changing in a positive way, compared with some popular types of insurance such as health insurance or life insurance, travel insurance has not been given proper consideration. Most of the purchasers are travel agents, but they only buy at a low cost. Very few travellers buy travel insurance, unless they participate in adventure activities or the places they plan to travel are frequently hit by natural disasters.

HANDLE RISKS TOGETHER

It is recommended to find out more about  the customer’s benefits in your insurance agreement. Let’s consider the benefits that this contract can bring to you.  First, travel insurance is responsible for any incidents arising on the itinerary. This may cover the loss or damages caused by unforeseen circumstances to your personal baggage, reimburse any non-refundable expenses in case of trip/flight cancellation and cover medical expenses including the cost of medical treatment, emergency medical transportation, personal injury, taking the body to home country in case of death. In addition, travel insurance also covers the cost of reissuing passport, visa, airfare in case travel documents are stolen; pays for accommodation expenses, travel cost if natural disasters occur or reimburses any non-refundable costs in case of flight cancellation/ delay, luggage loss, trip interruption and other incidents regarding the flight.

Wanderlust Tips | Travel insurance: Safeguard for the journeys

Moreover, some insurance companies also pay compensation if the travel agents go bankrupt. Incidents such as hijacking, hotel services being interrupted or canceled due to strikes or violence are also covered by some companies. Besides, several insurance agents even cover the property loss or damages if the client’s house is burned while they are traveling abroad.

However, travel insurance will not compensate in some cases such as risks from war, civil war; pregnant women; Likewise, the compensation is not applicable to suicide;  in the case of missing persons; infection of HIV or radioactive substance; illegal acts; going for medical treatment or joining adventure games.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: WHERE TO BUY AND HOW TO BUY?

In order to choose the right type of travel insurance, we need to consider many factors, for example, whether your trip is domestic or international, the destination is safe or not (political issues, natural disasters …). However, you should choose the type of travel insurance that can compensate for all of the cases mentioned above and has the 24-hour customer care, emergency rescue services (in the case of you getting stuck in a snowstorm in the mountains and a helicopter is needed for rescue, you should check if your insurance covers this or not).

In particular, customers who buy international travel insurance should consider the following factors in order to select the appropriate insurance package: costs for medical services of the destination (costs for medical services in European or American countries are much higher than in Asian countries), the age of the insured person that is likely to be vulnerable to risks to choose the coverage level of insurance appropriate with your need and budget.

Furthermore, another effective way to save money is to regularly stay updated on the promotional information of insurance companies to find a good deal. In Vietnam, there are four main types of travel insurance: domestic travel insurance, travel insurance for Vietnamese travelling abroad, travel insurance for foreigners traveling in Vietnam and international travel insurance. Each type of insurance specifies the benefits for customers and has a different cost. Nowadays, insurance companies in Vietnam have travel insurance products not only for tour operators but also for individual customers who want to travel domestically or internationally.

According to the survey, there are many companies that have travel insurance products such as Bao Viet, Bao Minh, Liberty, Blue Cross, ACE Life, AIG (Chartis). In particular, besides benefits, the premium is also a big concern for customers. Each insurance company will offer different service packages, corresponding to different compensation limits. At present, the lowest domestic travel insurance fee is VND1,500/person/day (the maximum compensation for an accident is VND10,000,000). Customers can also purchase insurance at higher levels of coverage: VND3,000/person/day; VND4,500/person/day… The premium for traveling abroad will vary depending on the type of incidents, destination and travel time.

Finally, do not solely rely on the insurers’ consultation. Before deciding to buy travel insurance, you need to do a lot of things. Firstly, check the reputation of the insurance company in the world or in the destination you travel to and the network of services that company provides. Secondly, carefully read and review the terms of your insurance contract for insurance coverage, compensation, and penalties to fully understand the compensation limits and other conditions required.

Also, make sure that the type of travel insurance you intend to purchase will cover cost for transportation, baggage, and healthcare (consider the exclusions, for example, if you have a terminal illness, you will not receive a certain type of  insurance payment). Most importantly, you also need to know the contract period as well as the time limit for notifications of loss or trip cancellation because if you do not follow time compliance in the contract, you will not get insurance payment.

If you book a tour, you also need to ask for more details because some travel companies when offering tour programme for the customers do not provide enough information about the insurance package. Sometimes they refuse to disclose the insurer, the maximum coverage or customers’ benefits. Due to this ambiguous information, even though the travel agents offer free insurance included in tour packages, some tour operators still discard the responsibility when their customers face unexpected circumstances.

The best backup solution is buying travel insurance, especially when traveling abroad or going alone because you may encounter difficulties in communication or suffer high medical expenses without family support. The cost of travel insurance is very small compared to the total travel expenses. When you are met with an accident, flight delay, missing baggage or personal papers etc,… you will realize how useful it is.” – Tran Dang Dang Khoa, a Vietnamese guy travelling around the world by a motorcycle has shared the experience to ensure safety when traveling abroad. He is also using Liberty’s travel insurance package while his friend, a guy with passion for hiking, Hoang Le Giang is choosing annual AIG’s one. “I am very careful when travelling so even though I go trekking quite often, I have only made use of the insurance claim once when my flight was delayed and the insurance company made payment for compensation quite quickly,” shared by Giang. For him, insurance travel is a guarantee that makes him and his family feel relief towards his dense travel schedule.

Understanding the benefits, costs, and types of travel insurance will provide you sufficient knowledge to choose the insurance company that suits your itinerary the most.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Bordeaux Oxygène: The convergence of new legends

Located in southwest France, Bordeaux is one of the most prestigious and famous wine-producing regions in the world, where dazzlingly beautiful vineyards make the most sought-after and finest wine. Excellent quality, unique style, and huge output can be considered the leading factors to establish the reputation of Bordeaux wine.

In order to maintain Bordeaux’s reputation and influence in the constantly changing and developing world of wine, some winemakers and heirs of wine mansions in Bordeaux founded Bordeaux Oxygène Association in the early 21st century. Harmonizing traditional values and the reform of the modern winemaking industry, Bordeaux Oxygène shows the public a fresh look of Bordeaux, the place that is no longer rigid and conservative, where young and promising generations inherit the traditions and live up to the reputation.

As a strategic partner of Bordeaux Oxygène, Red Apron Fine Wines & Spirits, one of Vietnam’s leading wine distributors, will bring wine connoisseurs a series of events from in-depth discussions with 8 winemakers to grand wine-tasting parties in 3 cities.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Bordeaux Oxygène: The convergence of new legends

At the wine-tasting session, guests can enjoy 40 premium kinds of Bordeaux wines produced from 15 wine mansions in the most prestigious sub-regions of Bordeaux such as Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Estephe, Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, in which the most remarkable are the Château Clos Fourtet and the Château Malartic-Lagravière. Château Clos Fourtet is rated Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Classification of Saint-Émilion wine, featured with the ancient small fort covered with ivy flowers and one of the largest wine cellars in Bordeaux. Located in Pessac-Léognan, Château Malartic-Lagravière is one of the only six Bordeaux Château’s that was rated in the Graves classification in 1953 for both of their red and white wines.

Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

Whether you just want to stop by for a while or spend the whole week, whether you are travelling with your family or trekking alone in the golden forest or sailing the silver sea, Phu Quoc will never disappoint you.

PHU QUOC – INSPIRATIONAL TRAVEL

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

Central Island

I chose to stay in a resort which is about 1 kilometre away from Ong Lang beach, and the whole precinct was layed out as a garden. Early in the morning, with light sunshine and sweet floral scent, I rode my bicycle around the quiet green foliage to enjoy the clear morning, while some other tourists were swimming in the pool.

We stayed in the central area, which is quite far from both the North of Phu Quoc Island (about 20 kilometres) and the South of Phu Quoc Island (about 30 kilometres). However, I could drive a motorcycle through the streets, past restaurants and night markets. Phu Quoc cuisine is really famous.

As staying in the central area, I only had to travel about 6 kilometres to Dinh Cau Rock, where the sunset only lasted for a few minutes but was really spectacular. You should arrive early because you might miss the sunset. Located on the large rocks protruding from the sea, Dinh Cau is a restored ancient temple.Islanders often call it the Temple of Sea Gods. There is a Tutelary shrine near the gate leading to the temple. The road to the temple includes 29 stone steps and there is an alter of “heaven” outside the Temple of Sea Gods. Not only is the symbol for peace for fishermen, Dinh Cau is also a tourist attraction. Some people go swimming at the beach at the foot of the Rock, while others are fascinated with aromatic barbecue stalls along the road which sell Vietnamese grilled pork sausages, grilled pork rolled in guise leaves, grilled girdle cake with egg, and baked manioc cake on hot coals. There is also a large restaurant nearby where guests can sip beer and watch Dinh Cau at sunset.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

After admiring the red glowing sun diving into the sea, we went to Bach Dang night market, a busy night market which is just less than 4 kilometres away from Dinh Cau; anyone who visits Phu Quoc cannot miss this destination.

The south of Phu Quoc Island

To explore the South of Phu Quoc Island where Sao beach and famous Ham Ninh fishing village is located, we rented a private car for only VND400,000 for the whole trip. There are a number of tourist attractions people often visit for shopping such as the fish sauce factory, pearl farms, black pepper gardens, and supermarkets selling products made from rose myrtle fruit. We tried the aromatic rose myrtle wine and sweet, clear rose myrtle honey before deciding to buy as gifts. The most impressive place is the fish sauce factory. You will immediately be overwhelmed by the smell of fish sauce that is normally faint but becomes really pungent and fishy in the thick air, which is kept in barrels made from litsea and golden oak to ferment anchovies with salt by means of the straining method. After 9 to 15 months, people will extract the fish sauce from the barrels using a professional extraction method. Phu Quoc fish sauce has a natural clear and reddish brown color thanks to the method of fresh fish fermentation and long fermentation time in wooden barrels. Soaking a few kilograms of fragrant Phu Quoc green pepper in this famous fish sauce will create a really fascinating flavour.

Visiting Phu Quoc prison was a quite emotional experience for me. Fortunately, the richness and beauty of Phu Quoc’s nature helps to lessen the darkness and pain of the world such as that associated with the prison. This is especially true when visiting the Tranh Stream tourist attraction. Unfortunately, we didn’t go in the rainy season and could not admire the stream. The scenery however, was still poetic and fresh, a big contrast to the world outside. I really liked the cool feeling when walking on the huge stone slabs, with moss covered at covering some corners, among the green forest canopy.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

Then we went back to Ham Ninh and visited Sao beach to enjoy the blue sea and white sand. Most of the beaches have coarse, light yellow sand, and the sandbank is very narrow and steep, while the water is reddish brown, not as blue as the Sao beach.

The north of Phu Quoc Island

We spent a day riding motorcycles to the North of Phu Quoc Island to experience the sunshine of Phu Quoc. The feeling of wandering the red dusty streets, admiring the mangrove forests and the white cotton plants far away was very special. Particularly, the entrance to Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc is surrounded by soaring trees.

People often ask me if they should go to Vinpearl Safari because they think it’s like a zoo, just to look at the animals. However, I felt it was really spectacular. It’s not just another visit to see animals in cages at a zoo but much more than that. It’s a journey of experiencing a semi-wild world, where visitors have to adapt to the natural environment of the animals. White tigers, white camels, a herd of antelope, rhinoceros and lions all roam free in their space. Humans are just guests who need permission to go in and admire the animals in their natural habitat. In addition, the food in the restaurant is quite delicious, with pizza, pasta, salads, and fried chicken very suitable for visitors to enjoy when they get exhausted after travelling under the hot sun. Though the Vinpearl Land entertainment area is not far away from here, you will not be able to experience it to the fullest if you visit both areas on the same day.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

The North of the Island is home to many construction projects, so there are quite a few messy places with markets, temporary shelters for workers, muddy roads after the rain, and also the trucks carrying construction materials driving on the road.

PHU QUOC CUISINE – UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES

Just by stopping on the sidewalk in front of any restaurant, you can experience the flavor of Phu Quoc in the spreading smell of its well-known fish sauce. All the restaurants have similar menus, but each of them have their own distinctive ways of cooking dishes and making sauces. Some restaurants add garlic and chilli peppers into the sauce while some others prefer adding passion fruit syrup. There are different types of sauces to serve with steamed seafood, fried rice, and grilled foods.

We usually had lunch at big restaurants in the centre area and dinner at the bustling ones at Bach Dang night market where we do not need to bargain because the prices are reasonable. When visiting Phu Quoc, make sure that you have savored all the seafood specialities such as fresh and sweet steamed shrimps, aromatic lobsters grilled on charcoal, fried mantis shrimps with salts, or grilled oysters with green onion.

Most importantly, do not forget to try the distinctive dishes here – sea urchin porridge and herring salad. Looking at the pieces of raw fish or spiked, black seaurchin might make some people feel uncomfortable. However, Phu Quoc people have made them into dishes featuring the gastronomic soul of the Pearl Islands. Herring salad is often the first choice of tourists because everyone wants to taste the sweet of the fresh fish fillets mixed with the scent of green wild vegetables. Fresh fish pieces have a certain fragrance, sweetness and crispness. Some restaurants arrange fish, onions, grated coconut flesh, roasted ground peanuts, chilli, jungle vegetables, green bananas and star fruits separately so the customers can squeeze lemon, mix and roll the ingredients themselves when eating. Some others will mix all kinds of ingredients in advance and customers just need to roll up the rice paper with a little vermicelli, dip it into the spicy and sweet pepper fish sauce to enjoy. It costs about VND110,000-150,000 per dish.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Phu Quoc: Where my heart stays

After satisfying your taste buds with all sorts of fresh seafood, the last dish will often be aromatic sea urchin porridge enough for 3-4 people at the price of VND80,000 – 100,000. The porridge is cooked to be slightly watery with extremely delicious flavours; it seems that this dish in every restaurant, no matter how large or small, has its own tasty flavor. The white porridge with a bit of black sea urchin meat and yellow sea urchin eggs, a little onion and black pepper will make the diners want to eat more even when they are full. After having a meal, you can go for a walk in a market, watch a magic show, stand in front of a restaurant with young people singing or dancing; or admire the Thailand ice cream roll seller showing off special techniques in his or her stall. A VND30,000 cup of blueberry or strawberry ice cream rolls will be a good choice for dessert.

When visiting Phu Quoc, going to the market and cooking are also great experiences. Phu Quoc Market is open during the day, located near the Bach Dang night market. The seafood here is quite cheap and fresh. You can easily cook a seafood meal with shrimp, squid, and blue crab dip with vegetables and water lily flowers for only VND200,000 – 300,000.

W.TIPS

WEATHER

Phu Quoc’s most beautiful weather is in the dry season from October to April, and this is not even the peak tourist season. Humidity levels are not high, at around 70-80 percent. The average temperature is about 27 – 28oC. It is hot during the day but cool in the evening.

SHOPPING

The Souvenirs can be bought at many places, especially in the South Island tour: pearls, products made from rose myrtle, fish sauce (all you need to do is give the factory your home address, and they will deliver it for you), black pepper, or you can buy dried seafood when visiting the fishing village.

Necessities or everyday items can be bought at many grocery stores, mini marts (Nguyen Trung Truc, Duong Dong), K-Marts (provincial road 45, Duong To, Duong Dong).

VEHICLE

– Currently, to travel to Phu Quoc, you can take a flight from Hanoi or Saigon. Or you can take a 2.5-hour speedboat from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc with prices ranging from VND300,000. What’s particularly convenient about traveling by high speedboat, you can take motorcycles to the island if you want.

– There are many choices for tourist to travel in Phu Quoc such as taxis, motorbikes or bicycles.

– As the South of the island – where there are many tourist attractions that might take you a whole day to visit – is quite far from the centre, it is recommended to rent a car with prices ranging from VND400,000 to VND800,000 per trip. I went there in the low season so the prices were quite reasonable, but you should negotiate and discuss in advance with the driver about the destinations.

– In the North of the island, there are tropical forests, amusement parks, zoos and the distance is not too far so you can rent motorcycles for about VND150,000-200,000 per day.

– If you ride a bike, it is better to travel in the early morning because in the afternoon the windy and sunny weather combined with the slopes and dusty roads are not suitable for cycling. Resorts often offer free bicycles.

ACCOMMODATION

Phu Quoc Island has many kinds of accommodations ranging from small, cheap hotels (far from the sea, normal comforts) at the price of few hundreds VND, to bungalows with gardens, pools and even kitchens, but excluded private beach like where I stayed at, with the price of above VND1 million per night. You also can find hotels with private beaches and swimming pool along Tran Hung Dao coastal street with the price of about VND2 million per night. The 5-star hotels in Phu Quoc will cost you VND2 million or more. Famous 5-star hotels include Novotal Phu Quoc, Chen Sea, La Veranda, The Shell, Vinpearl and Long Beach.

OTHER NOTES

– Phu Quoc is hot and quite dusty, so you should take glasses, hats, gauze mask and sunscreen. It is also recommended to take a jacket because it may be cool in the evening.

– In addition, there are many mosquitoes, especially in the evening and in the green areas, so you should carry mosquito repellent, burn essential oil and close the doors as well as windows in the afternoon and the evening. At Vinpearl Safari, if travelling with children, you can rent baby strollers for VND50,000.

Travelling to Phu Quoc in the lively summer days to enjoy blue sea, white sand, golden sunshine of Phu Quoc, a jade island where you create precious moments of young days with your friends and loved ones.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Share the love: The jade island of Vietnam

I visited Phu Quoc twice, the first time was for work so there was not much time to explore the island. The second time was in May this year, I travelled with my colleagues on a 4-day tour to Phu Quoc. On the island, our group visited many destinations such as Dinh Cau, Bach Dang night market, black pepper gardens, pearl farms, the Safari park, and took a boat to the sea to admire the coral. As a sea lover, what impressed me the most was the spectacularly beautiful sea in Phu Quoc. I have travelled to many islands and different seas, each of which has its own beauty; however, Phu Quoc’s sea is very special and easy to make the heart of anyone who has come here skip a beat.

The sea is a pellucid blue and jade colour, and the sky is so clear with bright golden sunshine. When the sun sets and seaside bars light up, you can take a stroll and enjoy the wind or drink a bottle of cold beer and listen to the sound of crashing waves. Whatever you do, it will bring you the most relaxed and refreshing moments by the sea.My trip was quite memorable and I am sure that if I could have another opportunity to come back here again, I will explore the destinations I have not had enough time to visit in previous trips.

I went to Phu Quoc in early March this year; it was sunny but not very harsh. My aunt and uncle settled here, so I stayed at their house in An Thoi town. An Thoi is mainly inhabited by local people, so I had a chance to experience Phu Quoc authentically as a local rather than a tourist. People from different regions come to Phu Quoc to settle down, but they are all warm-hearted and sincere people. When wandering around, you can park your motorcycles or bikes anywhere without fear of it being stolen, even when you forget the keys in the motorcycle. After the drive to explore Phu Quoc’s famous tourist destinations such as Sao Beach, Ho Quoc Pagoda, Tien well and many more, I often went back to my aunt and uncle’s home to have lunch instead of eating out.

We had seafood like squid, pelagic thresher, fried or grilled yellowtail and fried grouper at every meal. Phu Quoc’s squid meat is very tender and big. With no need to cook complicatedly, just adding lemongrass and ginger, boiling or steaming the squid will make a delicious dish. But the most distinctive specialty of Phu Quoc is sea urchin, and to me, cooking it with porridge is the best. At meal times, I liked to eat “BBQ grilled fish” with the neighbors. People gather, chat and enjoy the fresh fish just caught; the smell of grilled fish was so aromatic, which still makes me crave for it. In addition, I suggest that people try the fruit served with fish sauce and centella juice, which are very interesting local dishes.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Share the love: The jade island of Vietnam

As we were travelling with children, my family chose the self-sufficient Phu Quoc tour instead of booking an all-inclusive one. My first impression on Phu Quoc was its beautiful sea, jade green water, and long stretch of white sandy beach. However, on the day I went to the beach, the waves were rough and there was quite a lot of seaweed, which made us feel uncomfortable when swimming. Moreover, there were only a few services here and many places were very dirty. The beaches are also quite far from each other, up to 20 kilometres, so the travelling was actually inconvenient for my family when travelling with young children.

Phu Quoc cuisine is really delicious and cheap. In the night market, there are many fresh seafood restaurants where you can easily find shrimps, crabs, blue manna crabs, snails and mantis shrimp still crawling in the tank. The customers can choose whatever they want and request the restaurant to cook it the way they want. Among the seafood, I like blue manna crabs the most because it is small but the flesh is firm and sweet and wortha try.
Maybe the time I visited Phu Quoc, July, the weather was not ideal there. Also, many buildings in Phu Quoc were still under construction at that time, so the trip did not meet my expectations. I hope to go back there someday and explore more pristine places to have a more multi-dimensional view and be able to feel the full beauty of this famous island as many people have described.

Wanderlust Tips Magazine | Share the love: The jade island of Vietnam

I travelled to Phu Quoc with my family and this was a completely unexpected trip without any schedule in advance. I came to the island barely knowing anything about it. When I arrived at the airport, Phu Quoc welcomed me with a fresh and cool atmosphere; along the way from the airport to the hotel, the scenery looked so pristine with the mountain on one side and the stretching beach on the other side.

My most memorable experience when staying in Phu Quoc was diving and admiring the corals. I chose scuba diving and had to spend time training and practicing before taking the real deal. I did not know how to swim but still wanted to try it, so I took the chance and dived into the water. I felt really confident before jumping into the water but after that, all my courage seemed to disappear as I had to hold my instructor’s hand tightly and sometimes I even struggled and asked to stop. However, after being reassured by my instructor and gradually getting used to the breathing, I was able to experience true diving. The ocean world was so wonderful and I could not take my eyes off the coral reefs in unique shapes and brilliant colors. Perhaps I would definitely have regretted it if I had given up midway.
