Good day, Jean-Pierre Joncas! Please introduce yourself to the readers.

Hello, my name is Jean-Pierre Joncas. I’m the newly appointed General Manager of Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort. My name may sound French, but I’m actually a Canadian from Montreal.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in the hospitality industry and the chance to work at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort?

Regardless of my field of study or profession, my passion for entertaining friends, indulging in the art of wine and cooking, and hosting meaningful gatherings has always been a driving force in my life. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working in nine different countries, and Bali, Indonesia, had been a dream of mine, though the timing was never aligned. When the opportunity arose to join Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, I eagerly seized it because the hotel’s iconic charm perfectly resonated with my vision and aspirations.

How did the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort attract you? Three things are not to be missed when experiencing this place.

Renowned as one of the finest resorts worldwide, three unmissable features define this hotel: the breathtaking tropical landscape, the delightful beachfront offering a serene sea view for relaxation, and, most importantly, the dedicated team of Ambassadors who ensure unforgettable memories for our guests, reflecting the true essence of the true hospitality value of Sofitel.

What do you think about Asia’s tourism potential after the COVID-19 pandemic?

I am extremely optimistic about Asia’s tourism potential after the COVID-19 pandemic. With its abundance of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality, Asia has always been a sought-after destination for travelers worldwide. Indonesia, in particular, offers a unique blend of tropical paradise, diverse landscapes, and vibrant local experiences. We are committed to providing a safe and luxurious haven for travelers seeking relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. We believe that as travelers begin to rediscover the beauty of Asia, they will not only contribute to the region’s economic growth but also create lasting connections with its people, culture, and nature.

What are the important factors that the hotel will focus on developing to attract international tourists, especially American ones?

Offering unique experiences: that showcase the essence of Bali’s culture, art, and natural beauty. Offering exclusive activities, such as traditional Balinese ceremonies, local artisan workshops, and authentic culinary journeys, will create a lasting impression for our American guests.

Embodying sustainability, as American tourists are increasingly conscious of sustainable practices. Our commitment to environmental responsibility, community engagement, and ethical tourism will resonate positively with eco-conscious travelers. Providing collaborative partnerships with American such as travel agencies and airlines, will help us reach a broader audience and promote the resort as a preferred destination for American travelers.

What are some useful suggestions for travel vacations in Bali, which is known as Indonesia’s paradise island? What are the must-try things here?

Bali, Indonesia, is known for a lot of thrilling activities for travelers. With a various option in mind, one of the most iconic experiences would be:

  • To discover the cultural and spiritual heritage in Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, and Besakih.
  • Visiting beautiful pristine beaches has also been the main attractions whether it’s Nusa Dua (our very own), Seminyak, Nusa Dua (again), or Jimbaran, enjoy leisurely days in the sun and crystal-clear waters.
  • Oversee renowned waterfalls such as Tegenungan, Gitgit, and Sekumpul, offering refreshing natural pools for a rejuvenating experience.
  • Last but not least is to embrace a glimpse into Balinese culture by participating or witnessing a traditional Balinese ceremony.

After hard-working hours, how do you relax?

I enjoy art, movies, and travel. However, for me, I find myself most relaxed when I’m gathering with friends, Partaking in conversations over a bottle of wine, or perhaps even a few. Undoubtedly, being able to do what you love as a profession is the ultimate key to unlocking a life of happiness.

What are you most proud of in your career journey?

One of my most profound accomplishments stems from the privilege of working in 9 culturally diverse countries. However, my proudest moments are intertwined with witnessing the remarkable growth and development of my team, surpassing their own expectations and fulfilling their dreams of pursuing careers dedicated to prioritizing the needs of others, including guests and fellow colleagues.

What was an extremely difficult situation that you handled? How did you and your teammates overcome it?

The pandemic, recession, and financial challenges were undoubtedly the most formidable hurdles we faced. However, amidst these trials, I discovered the power of unity, empathy, and unwavering commitment to our values. Together, we rose above these obstacles, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever.

What is the message you want to send to today’s travel lovers?

Get out and Go! Doesn’t matter if it’s a new spot in your hometown, regional attraction or a lifetime trip across the globe. Immerse yourself in the experience, embrace the local flavor and discover the heart of the destination.
