Hi Hoang Anh, could you tell our readers what sparked your passion for travel? Was there a particular moment that led you to become a travel blogger and coffeeholic?
I think travel and coffee are passions shared by many, not just me! But my biggest inspiration is probably my father. He’s traveled to almost every province in Vietnam and has shared so many fascinating stories about the different cultures. As for the moment I decided to become a travel blogger and coffeeholic, it was probably when I… lost my phone. I lost all the photos and memories from my previous trips. That’s when I thought, why not document and share my experiences on social media? It’s a way to preserve my memories and hopefully inspire others to explore the world.
How has being a travel blogger and coffeeholic impacted your personal life?
Every profession has its challenges. In my case, my work schedule is quite flexible, which sometimes requires explaining to my family why I’m away on frequent and extended trips. Also, while I enjoy soaking in the beauty and culture of each destination, I also have to carry a lot of equipment for filming. Even when faced with a delicious meal, I need to take the time to capture it, even though I’m eager to dig in! [laughs] But overall, these aren’t major issues, and I’m incredibly grateful to be doing what I love.
Can you share some of the challenges and advantages of pursuing this path?
As I mentioned, some parents might find this profession a bit unconventional, even somewhat “unstable.” I had to have serious conversations with my family to help them understand. Also, the constantly changing work schedule can disrupt my routine and sometimes affect my health. On the flip side, I’m someone who appreciates beauty, so traveling to different places, learning new things, and capturing it all on film fulfills my passion. I also enjoy writing, which makes it easier for me to convey my experiences and messages. Lastly, I’m fortunate to have a very understanding travel companion, which makes every trip smooth and meaningful.
Who inspires you in your work?
As I mentioned earlier, my dad was the first person who inspired me to pursue this path. There are also many talented bloggers – if you were on Instagram between 2013 and 2017 and a fan of those VSCO filter days, you’d probably know who I’m talking about! Most of them have moved on to different careers now, but I’m always grateful for the inspiration they gave me.
What’s your preferred travel style? Do you prefer backpacking, luxury getaways, or cultural exploration?
My travel style is… spontaneous! [laughs] For me, travel is about having fun, gaining knowledge, and sometimes even pushing my physical limits. So, depending on what I need at the moment, I adapt my style accordingly. We all have to constantly evolve, right?
How do you usually plan your trips? Any tips you’d like to share with Wanderlust Tips readers for a smooth and budget-friendly journey?
I watch a lot of videos and read travel blogs about my destination. I create a detailed itinerary and check out reviews to prepare for any potential hiccups. I also always budget 20-30% more than I initially planned to avoid overspending. My secret is pretty simple: do your research, read a lot, and watch a lot.
Looking back at 2024, what was your most significant achievement as a travel blogger and coffeeholic?
I’ve always believed that success in this field isn’t a solo endeavor; it requires collaboration with many people. 2024 was a landmark year for me, as I had the opportunity to partner with numerous reputable brands that I’ve admired since before I even started my career.
Any memorable moments from your 2024 travels that you’d like to share with our readers?
My most memorable trip this year was probably my trip to China earlier this year. It was special because it transformed a country I “didn’t like very much” into one of my favorite destinations, so much so that I immediately planned a return trip! It was also the most recent trip where I got to travel with my entire family.
What plans are you brewing for your travel blogger and coffeeholic “career” in 2025?
2025 marks a significant shift for me. I’m planning to create more interactive and innovative content compared to what I’ve done before. This includes venturing into new platforms and reviving my focus on coffee and café-related content.
Are there any new challenges you’d like to conquer next year? Perhaps climbing a mountain, exploring a new region, or learning a new skill?
I’m hoping to go on a trekking adventure next year, as it’s something I’ve never tried before. I’d also love to visit a couple of new countries I haven’t been to yet.
With Christmas and New Year approaching, have you made any plans to “pack your bags and go” anywhere?
I’m planning to return to Shanghai for the holidays this year. I’m curious to experience a dazzling Christmas with vibrant colors in the chilly air – something we don’t get in Ho Chi Minh City.
What attracts you to that destination?
I’m intrigued to see how this city, where modernity and tradition intertwine, celebrates the festive season. Experiencing the holidays in a bustling city is always exciting.
Of all the places you’ve visited, which one left the deepest impression? Why?
I think the place that left the biggest impression on me was Bali, because I had… two monkeys snatched my glasses right in front of me! [laughs] Just kidding! It’s because the sunsets in Bali are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I also love the freedom and openness of the island. If I can be greedy, I’d also choose Hoi An. Sometimes, it feels as familiar as my hometown, and I know it has so much more potential for tourism development.
What’s your dream destination, the one place you absolutely must visit in your lifetime?
That’s a tough one! I have a long list. But if I had to pick just one, it would be New York City. I know it’s far away in many ways [laughs], but I’ve always dreamed of standing in the middle of New York and filming a story with the chorus of “Empire State of Mind” playing in the background. And since I’m being ambitious, I’d also love to visit Hong Kong soon. I’m a huge fan of the film “Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong” and director Wong Kar-wai.
In your opinion, what will be the biggest travel trend in 2025?
It’s not just my personal opinion; many travel reports predict that 2025 will be the year of family travel and experiences that enhance mental wellbeing. Strengthening family bonds and improving mental health are two pressing needs for people in the aftermath of the pandemic.
What advice would you give to fellow travel enthusiasts for a memorable trip?
Be open-minded, enthusiastic, and have faith in your destination, even if it’s your first time visiting. It’s like meeting someone after swiping right on Tinder! [laughs] Being open from the start will fuel your excitement and encourage you to prepare thoroughly, which in turn will help you have a seamless and enjoyable experience.
If you had one wish for travel, what would it be?
I wish that Vietnam’s tourism would reach its full potential, considering all that our country has to offer.
Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to our readers as we approach the new year?
I wish all the readers and the Wanderlust Tips team good health and many memorable trips in 2025!
